SMART DAIRY

Renewables + Efficiency

A dairy that integrates renewable energy and energy efficiency enjoys reduced energy costs and a smaller environmental footprint. Utilizing sustainable energy sources like solar, wind, or biogas, alongside energy-saving measures, not only optimizes operational costs but also appeals to eco-conscious consumers. This strategic approach enhances the farm's sustainability, marketability, and long-term viability while contributing to environmental conservation.

Cow Shades are designed to be off-grid, stand-alone power systems (SAPS) that generate electricity to charge a solar battery to replace  fossil fuels.

SOLAR

Solar panels on a dairy farm can serve multiple purposes, including generating electricity for operations, heating water, charging batteries for energy storage, powering ventilation systems for animal health, running irrigation for crops, and providing energy for electric fencing and lighting, all of which contribute to reducing energy costs and enhancing sustainability on the farm.

BIOENERGY

Dairy and nut farms can transform waste into bioenergy by employing techniques such as anaerobic digestion to produce biogas from manure and nut shells, gasification to convert biomass into electricity and heat, and composting to enhance soil for increased biomass yield. Additionally, oils from nuts can be converted into biodiesel, and co-digestion can maximize biogas production, turning waste management into an opportunity for sustainable energy generation and revenue.

WIND TURBINES

Integrating wind turbines with solar panels on a dairy farm allows for a more consistent and reliable energy supply, as they can offset each other's production dips due to weather and seasonal changes, and the excess energy generated can be stored or fed back into the grid, potentially reducing energy costs and enhancing sustainability.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Dairy farms can enhance energy efficiency by conducting energy audits, upgrading to energy-efficient equipment, switching to LED lighting, improving insulation, optimizing cooling systems, installing heat recovery units, investing in renewable energy, adopting smart farming technologies, streamlining operational processes, and training employees in conservation practices, all of which contribute to reduced energy consumption, lower operating costs, and a more sustainable agricultural environment.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Cow Shades provides an on-farm energy audit service through the EQIP Program. The audit identifies  and recommends upgrades to reduce energy usage, improve efficiency, and save costs. Energy improvements include: lighting systems, agricultural operations, and combustion systems.

Cow Shades's free online energy estimator tools  analyze savings and returns for farmer's participation.

VENTILATION

An optimized dairy barn ventilation system creates a healthier and comfortable environment for cows, leading to improved livestock productivity and well-being. Enhanced air quality reduces the risk of respiratory issues and disease spread among the herd, while consistent temperature and humidity control promote optimal milk production. Additionally, energy-efficient ventilation design lead to cost savings by lowering energy consumption and operational expenses.

Irrigating Fields

IRRIGATION

A state-of-the-art  irrigation system provides cost savings from regular maintenance and efficient operation.Integrated seamlessly into the agricultural landscape, it ensures minimal water waste and optimal plant growth, with smart controls for real-time adjustments to maintaining ideal pressure and flow.

Milk Splash

REFRIGERATION

Optimized refrigeration and chilling systems are pivotal for maintaining the freshness and quality of milk, food safety and extended product's shelf life. Designed for energy efficiency, leading to significant cost savings and a reduced environmental footprint. Smart monitoring technologies allows for real-time management and maintenance, enhancing the reliability of the cooling process.
